If this turns into a bashing thread, it's getting closed. Just answer the question and be done with it.

*shrug* I never used to abbreviation BFF. aside from the fact that 'forever' seems rather odd to put on something that's, face it, rather transitory. I mean, yeah, I have a 'best' friend. she's been my best friend for two years or so. I doubt she'll be my best friend forever.
SO though... significant other is a generic term for undefined relationships. it can mean boyfriend/girlfriend, partner, etc. for example, an older man and woman dating, say in their forties, don't necessarily want to use the terms "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" because they can seem teenager-ish. so they use partner or significant other. It can also be used to label a partner in a gay/lesbian relationship.

Actually I have a problem with a LOT of the abbreviations that get used in "netspeak". I am clueless about many of them. Granted, I LOVE more than a few....(ROFLMAO comes to mind)

Being male, I don't give my best friends anything, aside from liquor on birthdays and whenever we feel like getting hammered.
Being a guy is simple and awesome.
And yeah, I find most of the internet abbreviations inane and annoying, aside from a few of the classics.
"bf/gf" is particularly annoying, because for something like that, you'd think you'd want to put in the extra bit of effort to type the whole word.

True. The fact that I don't even buy stuff for my own family makes me a bitch, whereas males could get away with it.

Same with BBW. Spell it out, damnit.
