The other day one of my tech-savvy friends made the suggestion that I now have the biggest geek-penis out of everyone he knows. Upon hearing this I just looked at him sideways and didn't know what the hell to say. And what prompted him to tell me this?

I finally got an iPod, but not just any iPod... the 4 Gig Black iPod Nano!!

This on top of my previous purchase earlier this year, a laptop powerful enough to replace my desktop. As a side note, I ordered all the parts from seperate vendors and assembled the laptop myself and saved US$500+
-AMD Athlon 64 3400+
-1 Gig DDR400 RAM
-60 Gig 7200rpm hard drive
-Radion 9700 Mobile 128MB
-15.7" Widescreen (1280x800)
-8x Dual Layer DVD+/-RW
-3 batteries
-a/b/g wireless card
-200 Gig external hard drive
-Dual boot OSs, WinXP 64 Pro and Ubuntu Linux

My iPod is only about 70% filled and I haven't gotten to try any high end games on my laptop yet to test how fast it really is in a gaming environment. However when doing extensive 3D work, video editing, and extreme multi-tasking, I have had no problems at all. And for the iPod I have the Belkin FM tuner, and even driving in LA I still get pretty good sound quality. So overall, it was $2,500 well spent.

Anyone else here have a problem with being addicted to technology, gadgets, and other cool, but, epensive stuff?

PS. I have a pic of the laptop and Nano, but my cellphone is being a bitch right now and won't let me retrieve my photos.

You bet I have issues with gadgets. See my cell phone as an example.

Yes, the RAZR2 is major creamage for sure. Wish they could pack a Windows Mobile smartphone into the RAZR clamshell form factor though. The Moto Q is cool but too big for me.

Oh yeah, can't wait till my first paycheque (with additional sign-on bonus). Hello, home theater (projector, etc.)

I'm also looking at building two separate computers; One will be a linux box, on which I will run my webserver and other random batch jobs (burnage, etc.) that require brute power and very little gaming hardware. Eventually, I'll get another desktop, when the time comes to retire my laptop, which has served me well over the years. The linux box will serve as a test to make sure the hardware (especially case, power supply, MB) hold together properly.

Yeah, I'm addicted to tech as well, but I can't always afford it. I just got a 20 gig iPod for my birthday with the iMonster radio transmitter for my car, which sounds pretty damn good, way better then I thought anyway! Last year for my bday I got a pretty sweet laptop which is more powerful then my desktop. It has an A64 3200+ 512mb DDR, 60 gig 7200 RPM HD and the same widescreen you have there. I didn't build it myself though, but I did build my desktop which is slower, but its my baby and I love it! lol.

I am already plotting my next desktop, I'm going to try and hook myself up with the PCI express dual graphics cards in SLI mode. Right now my desktop is still in the AGP single graphics card era, and I can't stand that I've fallen that far behind. Dual FX 6800's here I come! lol

Heh... the other day I priced all the parts I would want for a desktop and it came out to be about $6,400. Ya, not going to happen anytime soon.

Specs:
Athlon 64 X2 4800+
Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLI nForce4
4 Gigs DDR400 Dual Channel RAM
Ultra Silent 600w power supply
1.6 TB of hard drive space (1TB from 2 SATA RAID 500 Gig drives and 0.6 TB from 2 ATA 300 Gig drives)
24" Widescreen LCD (1920x1200)
Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Pro 8 (7.1)
7.1 Speaker system
2x GeForce 7800GTX running in SLI mode
And the whole thing running liquid cooled with a setup from Koolance... so I can overclock the whole thing.

I'd have less of a problem with the addiction if I actually had the money to afford it. ;) Right now it's more a lot of painful drooling. *g*

Yeah, I'm certainly a tech freak. Between my two internal and my one external drive, I have 320 GB of space and I'm already plotting my next computer build for the summer. I did a huge video card upgrade from an ATI Radeon X300SE to an X800XL, too, and got a new DVD burner. I just replaced the one at home with a "budget" build last summer and had fun just building it. I'd get into iPods, but they're too trendwhorish for me. When I'm at home, I do all of the maintenance, which includes three desktops (including my own) and a laptop which are all connected by a combination network of 11b and wire.

I turn my computer builds into more of a practical obsession. I'm adverse to SLI since you have to crush huge amounts of money for a relatively small increase in speed, and I probably won't get into CrossFire once it hits mainstream, unless they can do better than a 50% performance jump.

Current comp specs:
Dimension 8400 case, 350W power supply
Intel 925X chipset
P4 530 3 GHz, 800 MHz FSB
1 GB DDR2-533 SDRAM
80GB & 160GB SATA Seagate Barracuda drives
Samsung 16X DVD-ROM drive
NEC 3540A DVD-/+RW DL drive
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 soundcard
Dell 5.1 speaker system (100 Watts total) (Sennheiser PC150s for gaming)
Connect3D ATI RADEON 256 MB X800XL video card
17" Dell UltraSharp monitor

Current plans for new computer (depends on advancement and budget):
Athlon64 3700+ or higher, or mid-high range X2
1.5 - 2 GB memory
500 GB< SATA drive space
Sound and video card most likely from my current computer.

Heh, the PC I just purchased yesterday for my studio:

(assembled by yours truly)

AMD Athlon64 X2 4400+
4096mb Corsair ram
1terabyte of storage
Two 19" Samsung LCD monitors
Asus A8N-SLI-Premium Motherboard
Leadtek GeForce 7800GT 256mb video card
Epson RX510 printer (clicky clicky (http://www.zdnet.com.au/reviews/hardware/printersscanners/0,39023422,20281488,00.htm) )
Gina 3G sound card (clicky clicky (http://www.computersandmusic.com/sitemap/p/Echo_Gina_3G_796.htm) )
And in my opinion the coolest part, the case (clicky clicky (http://www.silverstonetek.com/products-lc16m.htm))
And a pair of Mackie HR824 studio monitors (clicky clicky (http://www.ausaudio.com.au/s.nl/sc.2/category.8/it.A/id.29/.f) )

And I too just got a black 4gb Nano. :D

So yes, I think it's fair to say I am addicted to technology. :P

OK fellow tech freaks, to switch gears over to the home theater world, is anyone planning on getting an HD DVD player when they come out later this year? There has been a huge argument over which format would be the wave of the future, blu ray or HD, and apparantly both are still coming out! But it looks like HD will be first, however, seeing that Beta tapes lost to VHS ultimately, it might be worth waiting to see which DVD format wins before deciding.

I've sort of been bypassing the tech craze for the past couple years, almost in the hopes of waiting for EVERYTHING to be integrated i.e. the ipod, phone, computer dealy being more compact and cheaper.

i'm still using the computer i had in the late 90s, and haven't upgraded it a bit. It serves its purpose though

I'm going to go with a Bluray burner when it comes out because of PS3 :)

I've got a laptop computer (1.7GHz Toshiba Satellite) Desktop (P4 3.2 GHz, 512MB PC-3200 RAM, ATI Radeon X800XL video card), digital camera (Toshiba PDR M700. Spectacular!), PDA (Toshiba e400 Pocket PC. Another fine Toshiba product.), VoIP (Just got that this month from Vonage), DVD player (plays anything you can put onto a CD or DVD, pretty much, plus it supports memory cards. If only I could turn the goddamn subtitles off...), plus a few memory cards ranging from 16 to 512 mb.
