what's the word on the Hobit? last I heard, Peter Jackson agreed to do it as long as the guy who played Gandolf would do it, but Ian McKellen was saying he thought it should be done by someone younger. I'm sure Ian Holm (bilbo) would do it, but, it's really up to McKellen as far as I know, and Jackson has to finish King Kong as well, any word?

why would gandalf be done by someone younger?
the five wizards came to middle in the form of old Men, but they never age.

lol Taco.

Ian McKellan would HAVE to do it. anyone else would just suck.

But Ian Holm can't do it. JUST for that 10 second clip of him finding the ring in the prologue of the first film he has his face stretched and plastered back so that his wrinkles would be gone. He' just too old to be playing a guy who's supposed to look 30.

eh...I don't know if I'd like it as much is someone other than Holm did it, because they did make the mention that he never looked like he aged until after he left the shire, and as for why mckellen feels gandolf should be played by someone younger-I have no idea, I suppose he's just insane!

yeah, but because hobbits age more slowly than humans (I believe it was normal to live to 100) then the tended to look younger. I think of it this way... they come of age at 33... which is equivalent to 18.

Gandolf is like a couple millennium old isn't he? Why would he need to look younger, the few decades between stories is nothing but a drop in the pond compared to his age.

yeah, that's my thinking as well. I mean... I THINK Gandalf appeared shortly after the first fall of Sauron (I could be totally off on this....) Which wuld make him about 3000 years old. (I'm following the book here, not the movie)

hey muffy, that sign is freaking awesome...and as for the all the age questions, I honestly don't know. jackson has the right idea wanting to use mckellen, and I haven't heard about whether or not he'll use holm or not, I'm sure he'd want to, cause he's actually really true to the books and the movies alike, so I'm sure he'd be the last to suggest a major casting change...thus the film's future hinging upon the actors, rather than the director!

That sign is awesome. I seriously want it in my front yard or in my bedroom. :cool2:

So will Jackson definetely direct The Hobbit someday? I've been too lazy to find out about it online. IMO though, I think that Ian Holm(as great as he was) would be a tad too old to play a younger Bilbo. But I definetely cannot see it ever being a good movie without McKellan. He was born to play the role of Gandalf, and if he was about as old as kuju said then I don't really see what the problem would be.

There are a lot of legal issues involved now as well. It would have been a lot easier if New Line was sucessful in buying up MGM, Sony purchased them up I think. New line and MGM each had partial rights to the book I believe, so any deal now to make the movie would have to be done through sony.

I dont think they will give up the rights for cheap either.

Ian Mckellan has said he would prefer if it was a series say 10 1hr episodes or something along those lines.

it's not THAT long a book! As for "being younger", well... Gandalf is certainly less "active" in the Hobbit than he is in LotR. It's mostly a lot of walking...

the Hobbit always bothered me though. EVERY TIME anything happened it was "Get the thief to do it. That's what he's here for" Plus they'd need 12 (or is 13?) dwarves.
