It’s not like I even really knew the kid. Yeah, we’d been seen together, but he was just tagging along and I didn’t want to hurt his feelings. He didn’t seem to have friends, you know what I mean? He was one of those kind of guys. I guess he wanted to join the frat because I was in it, but it wasn’t like we were friends or anything. He just didn’t know anyone else.
Honestly, I didn’t like hanging out with him. I guess that sounds kind of bad now, but you can’t start liking a guy just because he blew his brains out over the weekend. But watch, just watch. People will be coming out of the wood work now, saying they knew him and liked him, just ‘cause he’s dead. I’m telling you, though. The guy was weird, hard to talk to, you know? Nobody really talked to him, that’s the truth.

God, people keep asking me that. It’s, like, all people can remember about him from high school was that we went out. We didn’t even really go out, not really. We were just stupid kids anyway. We had this class together and he was real nice to me, helping me with my work and all. So he says, “I’d like you to be my girlfriend,” just like that, all formal and polite, and I’m fourteen and stupid. Plus, I was never a pretty girl, not like Dana Thompson who always had boys wanting to be her boyfriend, and so I say ok, because being someone’s girl makes me somebody, you know?
But he was a nobody and my friends were laughing and after he started bringing me things at school, like candy or whatever, I didn’t talk to him anymore. You know it took him three months to get the hint? God, can you imagine? I was so embarrassed. Even now, with all this, I’m embarrassed. It’s all sad he hung himself or whatever, but after what he did in front of all those guys…I mean, would you want to be connected to that?

Of course the other boys will be dealt with. This is a delicate situation. Although the boys never threatened or physically harmed Nicholas, they are, in a way, directly responsible for the psychological state he was in when he took those pills. I don’t think anyone will press criminal charges, however. The boys are very sorry and are being extremely cooperative. We haven’t been able to get in touch with the family yet. Hopefully our authorities can reach them before they see it in the news. It’s a shame that it made headlines so quickly, before we could really sort out the story. The whole thing is just a tragedy, that’s what it is. A tragedy.

I was in Ohio when it happened, so I didn’t have anything to do with it. I was actually at Denny’s with my family when all of a sudden my cousin comes up with the paper, kind of laughing, and says, “Isn’t this your frat?” My mom was horrified. We didn’t know the guy that died or anything, but I’ve been friends with Chris since little league. I guess he’s in a lot of trouble, but I really don’t think it’s his fault. I mean it. Chris is a good guy, and he just thought the guy would laugh it off. Who even knew he would do that kind of thing? I don’t know if I’m going to stay with the fraternity. The whole house is known as the guys who killed the freshman.

We did different things to all of the new guys. One of them had to sneak into the sorority and get pictures of the girls, one of them had to steal beer from a 7-11. Yeah, it’s stupid stuff, but we always make them go through some kind of trial. So what happened is we all got pretty wasted and then there’s Nick, wanting to be in the frat, and we’d all forgotten about him, ‘cause he’s that kind of person. We hadn’t thought of any kind of test, so I think they’re going to tell him he can’t join, when all of a sudden Chris starts laughing and jumps us and says he’s got one and he’ll drive.
So there’s about six of us and we’re piled into Chris’ car with Nick and he takes us way the hell out somewhere to this farm. I’m so wasted I don’t even know what’s going on, but Chris is all serious and walks out into the field with Nick. Then he tells him that he has to go…God, it’s really stupid…he has to go nail a sheep, if you know what I mean, or we won’t let him in. We’re all stunned, and then we start getting the joke and we’re laughing and patting Nick on the back, saying it’s ok, we’ve all done it. He looked pretty bad, and I didn’t think he was going to do it, but he got this funny expression on his face.
Then he walks out and he finds a sheep. We think he’s bullshitting us, but he goes at it, and we’re laughing our asses off at him, while he thinks we’re cheering him on. When he comes back he’s got this weird look on his face, like he’d been crying or something, but he smiles and says that he’s glad to be in the frat. Well, Chris starts laughing harder and he tells him that we don’t have sheep fuckers in our frat. Then we left him. We just left him, standing out there in the field. Next thing we knew…
