Mine is The Exorcist. It didn't genuinely scare me but had quite an impact on me that has stayed with me over the yrs. And that could've been because of many reasons...the amazing special effects..stunts, good casting and acting, a haunting score.. great script(from a great novel I highly recommend).

But the impact that this movie can have on a person is much more powerful then the parts that make it. I've heard my parents talk of people running, screaming, and fainting at the first theatrical release back in the 70s. For on the whole, the story seems silly. But because of the genuine characters involved..with a real girl that's perfectly happy and normal...It lures you into believing in such nightmares. And because this movie deals with universal subjects like faith, love, good, and the Devil himself...the terror will never fade.

And still even after countless viewings...I still cringe when I see the girl stab herself in the crotch with the crucifix. And when she turns her head around...I never thought that a dummy could look so horrifying.

Other favorites of mine are...

Halloween
The Shining
Silence of the Lambs(it was considered a horror film)
Carrie(actually the one movie that scared me as a kid)

I honestly cant watch the Exorcist... it messes me up for years.

But my favorite has always been Halloween. Theres something very creepy about a guy who never speaks.... and who just stares....

not the mention the killings. ha ha ha ha

The Shining is just plain hilarious to watch. Sure, Jack Nicholson is a great actor, but Shelley Duvall is Mrs. Melodramatic. I think it's too funny to be scary.

I think I'm impervious to scary movies, or something. I get bored watching them. The newest Texas Chainsaw Massacre was dull until there was an inside joke on our company (long story). I watched the Exorcist in "the version no one has ever seen until it was released" and it was dull. Silence of the Lambs was interesting psychologically but little of anything else. And those are my high opinions. *shrugs*

I think maybe you're just totally desensitized or something. I am too, for the most part, but I've always had a huge love for movies..and how they're made..and complex characters and underlying themes. And all that good stuff.

What makes The Shining good, IMO..is 2 things. The artful and unsettling(if often lengthy) direction of the late and great Stanley Kubrick. If you've seen a Kubrick movie then you know how they are. And then there's Nicholson. I've seen practically all of his movies(and think he's one of the best actors ever) so I never found him to be scary. But in some of the long drawn-out scenes he manages to keep your interest with his maniacal humor. So thank gawd for that.

And I can't say enough about Silence of the Lambs that would do it justice. Rarely are movies praised more then the book they're based on...but in this case the movie wins. Start with Anthony Hopkins. I believe that role was the best villain I've ever seen. Period. And you can't even hate him because he's so witty, intelligent, and is willing to help Clarice. There's tons of psychology to be found but in the end(which comes to such a fantastic climax) its about a lone woman being stalked by a killer in the dark. And ultimately Hannibal has the best line in the movie in the closing scene...where he hints on the phone to Clarice that he's on the hunt again. I love it. Deliciously evil. :cool2:

Movies just aren't scary anymore.

Although The Shining in book form was and is the scariest thing I've ever read/saw.

Of course, I did read it when i was 11 lol

I'm not really scared by movies anymore, but when I was younger and not used to all the scare cliche's I thought the movie Seven was messed up and it freaked me out for a while. I was 13 when I saw it, and violence on that level horrified me.

I'd say the most recent film where I was at least surprised a few times and couldn't predict everything was The Ring. As I said in another thread, probably the best horror film in the last 5 years, maybe longer!

Seriously, All dogs go to heaven? What was scary to you? I think I watched it once when I was 7, I don't even remember what happened except some dogs die and go to heaven lol.

For scariness factor, definitely Ring (jap version... i wonder what japanese people think of the fact they call it "Ringu" in america).

For entertainment value... it's a cross between Exorcist and The Shining... Exorcist was really funny, cause we watched it with tons of chicks from our dorm hehehe. Also, one of them was highly religious and believed the whole thing to be a tale that can easily be true or something, so she was fuckin terrified... it was great!!

edit: oh yeah, one more category: "Stupidest fucking horror flick ever"... The nominees are Blairwitch Project, and fear.com. Fear.com wins it though, cause of the whole "My daughter was a hemophiliac... I let her play in the steel mills" business hehe.

That movie sucked. It was roughly 70 minutes long, and it sucked. I was never scared, and laughed through most of the movie. Dear god, it sucked.

The Ring scared the mother loving shit out of me. I turned into such a pussy with that movie. I couldn't be anywhere in the dark by myself...I was always scared to turn the TV, in fear that it might turn back on....dear god, it was scary.

However, it was the sounds of a horror movie that scare me the most. Suspense is more frightening than ANY horror movie. The scary music, or lack thereof, during a scary part of the movie just builds, causing me to just about scream when the scary part comes. Oh my god, The Ring was full of that...just incredibly frightening.

Its a fine line with Horror movies, its hard to draw a line with some between Thriller and Horror, and scary and cheezy.

Honestly. Im not a fan of the genre that much, I dont get scared, the stories arnt that plausable, and other then a few jumps, most movies arnt that scary, lets be honest.

Even The Ring was pretty tame.
Maybe im just not phased by these movies, but I am really having a hardtime trying to think a few that I really liked, let alone a few I would call my favorites.

Both versions of Dawn of the Dead made me jump out of my seat. Not really because it was scary, but because I was just like, "No dude! There's a zombie!" Sound effects get me more than zombies/death/etc.

If there's anything I'll watch even though I'm covering my eyes, it's all those damn operation shows. I absolutely love them, but I can't stand seeing someone's insides up close and personal.

I hate scary movies so much, I get scared SO easily. Movies with Zombies are by far the scariest(OR possessed children/dolls).

Here are some movies(mostly recent) where the commercials alone freak me out-
Dawn of the Dead
Darkness Falls(though I'm sure it's stupid, I went to the dumbass website and THAT was scarier than the movie was, probably)
The Core(okay I realize this isn't supposed to be scary, but in real life, earthquakes scare me more than anything which is bad living in Seattle).
Saw
The Grudge

That's just a taste of how scared I get. Ahhh. There are a lot more that freak me out. *sigh*

The first Poltrageist movie has always been one of my favorites, though I dont think there was ever a time when it actually scared me. In fact, I think the only time I've ever been bothered by a movie was when I saw the Ring (twice in the theaters, the only reason I went the 2nd time was because a guy I liked asked me) - that movie really screwed with my head, and I couldn't get some of the super-screwed up visuals out of my head for weeks. I think I might've even had nightmares including that shot near the beginning where the one girl finds her friend all fucked up in the closet, and you see her lifeless head fall to the side or something... *shudder*

I don't really get scared by scary movies. I don't like really blood-and-gore movies, so I tend to stay away from those, but real horror movies...I dunno, I guess I don't have a hard time remembering that it's just a movie. Sure, I jump and get scared when I'm watching them, but they don't leave any sort of impression on me. Like The Ring--I definitely jumped while watching it, but as soon as I left the theater, it was just like, "Well, that was a good movie."

Anyway, I really like "Psycho." As cliche as it is, I love the shower scene. I love the way my heart starts racing with the music and my mouth just goes all dry. 8)
