View Full Version : Tired of horror movies...

Even though horror is my #1 genre, I have grown tired of horror films. I don't know what it is, but they all seem to be recycled stories, cardboard characters and more plot holes than a flower garden in May. I've not really seen that many modern day horror films that I find scary or interesting, except Saw, but even they got silly after a while. So, anyone agree that horrors are hitting a bum note nowadays?:pizza:

Lol, Welshie and I were discussing this topic today actually.
Horror movie makers are too focused on beefing them up with scary special effects or the shock factor with little to zero thought/plotlines behind them I think and as a result most of the newer ones are just crap and like you said, just the same stuff over and over again. Child haunting story ~gasp~ let me guess, she was killed in a horrible way or wronged....wow, didn't see that one coming.
The Others (thanks Welshie for bringing it up) was totally genius simply because of the storyline itself, I'd never seen anything like that, 28 Days Later too was amazing I thought because it felt so real like something like it could happen, mankind's evil eventually bringing itself downn, and though The Ring had a ton of visual effects the idea that the evil of the villain was not explained, she was just twisted and evil with no explanation, made it so much better I think.
Sadly though when you look at more modern movies like The Orphan, genius idea with a grown psycho woman posing as a child....but then they screwed it up by making the father's character out to be what writers call the "too stupid to live" type because no person in reality would willingly be that blind to the circumstances around them without maybe even a shred of suspicion.

Horror movies in their common style do very little for me. There might be a small shock in a movie theatre based on the fact that the sound is loud and it's easy to scare the fuck out of someone based on sudden noise but the best horror movies are the ones that fuck with your mind.
The Blair Witch Project was one that i enjoyed because of the fact that it messed with your mind. There was pretty much nothing gruesome shown throughout the course of the movie and yet the presence of the horror was very real, atleast for me.
If anyone wants to watch a pretty decent movie along these lines, try Wolf Creek. It's Australian with some gore but i lot of messing with the mind.

I've seen that wolf creek - It's about some maniac with big dogs and tourists who breakdown in the outback, I wouldn't say it was scary as I was half asleep, but yeah it was gory.. I have just downloaded the thing, well the remake so I'll keep you updated in about a month. If you have a ps2 play projext zero 2 crimson butterflies.. now that was scary.

Yeah, I tend to think gore is just an excuse to shock people cos it disgusts 'em. When you get yourself a great wee movie, it makes your day, kind of! :coffee:
Well, I was watching a couple of old Amicus Production films with the frame story linked to other smaller stories. These are British films, by the way. They are quite chilling. You can still tell a great story in 10 minutes or less! And the ham acting does not hurt them either. In fact, the OTT acting is what makes it fun viewing.
And Jon Pertwee as a vampire in The House That Dripped Blood was hilarious! :fu:

I'd recommend foreign horror, but knowing Americans, they'd just go get the rights to remake everything.

That's because we are rich and we can.

But they have to be great remakes to outshine the original Japanese versions. I think America do enough of their own horror, and to want to remake every major J horror flick out there, well, it scrapes the barrel of desperation.

Meh, of the ones where I've seen both, I've always preferred the Japanese version. American remake just takes the main plot, and fills it with the same shit that makes american horror films shitty (instead of something subtly fear-inducing, they go for the "startle them with a spider and a loud noise" approach).

Yes, that's what they always do. It's cheap, by the numbers hacks that destroy credit worthy efforts. That's like hating Stephen King cos you saw a TV adaption based on his books. Therefore, my first post and a few of the responses are precisely why we believe the genre is dying off. It had a good run, though! :santahat:

i feel that way about zombie movies. you watch enought (which i have seem about 30) they all seem the same. carecters, plot and endings. I do like horror movies based of real events tho. Not in a sick way but it lets you know this really happened and the wernt carecters they where real people who survived (depending on the movie)

The zombie genre is good fun, and so is the cannibal genre. Resident Evil is my fave video game series ever, and it of course used to primarily feature zombies before the Las Plagas were introduced in RE4.
If you'd asked me about games 15 years ago and wanted to know what one I'd liked best, I'd have probably shrugged my shoulders and said it was Twin Bee or Super Mario World, but after I played RE2 and then the original RE, I was hooked. Now RE is destroyed due to Capcom's new Action Horror crap and lies about how the Nintendo 3DS is gonna be cool with the graphics and make you feel scared, even though it looks like a handheld clone of both RE4 and 5 before it.
Sure, they say it's meant to be scary again, like I believe anything they say. RE hasn't been quite the same since 2005. That year 2005 though, it seemed like the last real great year for me, cos most horror films & games sucked after that, and IRL too, things went downhill quick! :wrench:

You should try Dead Island.

I have it. It's still sealed. :lol3:
I think it's like a sandbox game with zombies in it, like Dead Rising before it. Not sure if it's a true horror game. Left 4 Dead for example, is a shooter game with endless amounts of zombies attacking the players. That does not qualify as horror as such, because it is not scary...

Never played any of the games you mentioned apart from Resident evil on the Ps one which put me of zombie games  Silent Hill was good. Tried RDR Zombie ?

By the way, he "I'm confused" post was due to the spambot posting something after I did. It's gone so it looks lke I'm talking to myself, lol. :coffee:
P.S. You should try Silent Hill 2, stashfix. I think you'd really get into that series quite quickly...

I think the problem with horror is that it began so long ago, and everything that has been done has been done too much. To the point where nothing's really that original anymore, and you gotta go where the money is, so it's always usually more nonsensical remakes, or prequels, sequels, reimaginings, and more. Same with books, games, any other form of media besides videos. God, I've lost count of how many "sexy babes lost in the forest flicks with a killer on the loose" I've seen, or just slop in general. Like Creepshow III, God, that blew ass! And the new 'Dead' films like Diary, Land, or Diary can't hold a candle to Dawn of the Dead. That film worked in 1978 cos you had blue collar actors with real talent making a B movie seem like an A film, cos of how well the acting, camera, production, make-up work, etc, was! And it influenced other horror directors. But today, you can only get influenced by overrated movies such as Paranormal Activity, Saw, Hostel, the hell? That's just a sad slow death for the genre.
