I want to delete some threads I started. How do I do this? I do not see the edit button on old old threads.

You can't. There is a time limit of 6 hours to edit/delete a post, once that has passed, it's permanent.

Don't bother asking if staff with either, they won't do it.

Looks like they're stuck in internet land sorry.

"per the user agreement, we do not edit posts, threads, accounts or pictures. We do not delete posts, threads, accounts or pictures. We will not change your username. Pick something anonymous and remember that there is a short time limit for when you can still edit your own posts/threads."

many posters have similar questions.
i do understand that before they sign up they have to pick carefully as they have an agreement etc. before they post.
on the other hand, they way i get the answers, is implying that the administration will not do it. it is not telling me that the administration can not do it, but rather they will not do it.

after some consideration, i realized, that people when under emotional stress, do anything to get help. this is why they sign up and share their problems with the forum. life goes on and after a bit people's life changes and might get better.
the moment which was so important at that time is not so significant after 6 months. so it is only logical that they would like to delate as actually not only personal information(post) gets exposed but personal details, which leads posters to sign up.

when under stress you do anything to get help.
once you helped you should have the right to have your post delated if you choose it. and i am sure there might be a way...

They were inflamatory and really offensive in some posts to some people.

Reminder to anyone reading this, the rules can be found here: http://www.relationship-forums.com/misc.php?do=showrules

The last rule is the most direct answer to your question free,
Finally...Staff rules all. When staff makes a decision on a banning or an action taken against a member, it does so with the best interests of the membership of The Relationship Forums in mind. Circumventing a ban is a great way to never come back to this site again.

If you're an abusive asshole or a spammer or posting something illegal, we'll delete your posts. I currently delete around 5-8 posts per day.

You're absolutely right in pointing out - what people point out every single time this extremely tiresome discussion comes to the surface again - that the staff are capable of deleting most posts. Most. Not all. Images cannot currently be deleted, nor can threads which were made before the software migration.

So why won't we?

Well, for one thing, the intent and purpose of the forum is to help people and that goes for more than the person who made a post. That goes for everyone who browse the forum without registering or asking for help. We're not a help chat line, we're an archive of situational advice. A lot of people who complain about our deletion policy don't get that because they're registered members themselves who are interested in the news from the forum, not its history. That's also why the editing period is now so short. People were deleting their content -- i.e. taking advantage of us, without even contributing while doing it.

The unofficial reason, which gets stronger and stronger every time we have this discussion, is the sheer rudeness and entitlement issues of the majority (though not all) of people who PM us with demands (not requests) that we delete such and such, despite the clear and very short moderating policy they get to read when registering. People will do anything to get help? People will say anything to get their way.

We're not ogres, though (no offence to ogres). If someone has a legitimate reason for wanting their posts or account removed, their name changed or something edited, we'll do it, and we tell them that when they PM us. What we don't do is give out the short-list of legitimate reasons. ;)

ok, i got it. and i do appreciate the explanation.
thanks for clearing this for me;)
i like to add, i do appreciate your time and work you put into this. many gets helped but indeed many takes advantage or being abusive.

i did not think people would PM the administrators. sorry about my narrow-mindedness. :( you are right.

my other observation is that this forum has served many people well. you are all doing a great job.
and sometimes it is hard to think differently than other do.

i think i am getting closer to: normal knowledge:D

Well, free, YOU are a good poster. You give good advice and spend a lot of time giving it. Think of this situation: Person A posts a problem. you spend 15 minutes typing out a long and informative answer. So do other people. Person B says "Hey, that's great, this applies to my situation too!" Then person A says "can you delete my post?" If we deleted that post, it would delete the entire thread by default, effectively erasing everyone else's posts that they spend time and energy on. Person B would lose out on that advice if he wanted to see it again. Anyone ELSE doing a search in the future would lose out on that advice. And every who posted would lose the post on their postcount. Finally, three days later person C posts almost exactly the same question. No one wants to answer it AGAIN, when they just did, so person C is out of luck. Especially because without the first thread, OvershareDude has nothing to link him to!

THAT is why we don't delete stuff. And why I often encourage out regular posters to quote the OP's post in their FIRST response to a thread... so he can't edit it out with the time limit!

there: normal knowledge.

Kuju! I make it a habit to quote someone new until I know they aren't gonna ninja their thread away, I don't bother if it's past the time limit.

I do like linking! I just did it in a previous post to Wikipedia

yes ma'am, thank you for the positive comment! I hope i can contribute as much as i have time for.

and you are absolutely right, we put considerable amount of time into this and sometimes you get carried away. and i can see your point completely as sometimes even i get a bit frustrated when after a comment there is no more feed back from the poster. and i should not think about it, but i can not help to think about some people who are in real need of help.

so lets pedal on and will edit next time OP - hope will remember...
thank you kuju

That's the thing about the internet. Once you've posted something, it's pretty much there forever. But don't worry, if you didn't post it under your everyday email address, no one you know will ever see what you've said. :glare:
