Hey I have a few questions about mono, because from what I've read, I might be developing it. Anyways, my friend who got a 'mysterious' throat infection went over to my girlfriends house and they ended up sharing the same drinking glass on accident. Anyways my girlfriend and were kissing and from what my friend has said, is that she doesn't have strep throat (which i just had a week ago) but they also said that she MIGHT have Mono...end uh well I'm 15 and missing a month of school well would kill anyone but, eh someone please comment. My current symptoms: swollen back of throat, which started on the right side of my face on my lymph nodes I believe. I'm also feeling really tired, and I have a fever. :-? Eh! I think I might die! :o Ha..but yeah..thanks in advance for the help/comments.

Mono feels REALLY shitty. REALLY shitty. I'm not sure, but it's more then a sore throat, but it does infact start there. But..I'm not a doctor, and I've never had mono.

SO...

I would talk to your parents or something. Go to the dr.

Ew. I've had those symptoms. My left lymph was so disturbing, so big it grew. Took almost month or so, but it took care of itself (I probably got it from my boyfriend, who had the same symptoms, who got it from running outside in his underwear in -18C)... of course, my boyfriend had problems with it for six months... and the doctors said it was an infection, and gave him some medication for the green slime he kept hocking up.

Oh gee Deidre - THAT was a mental image I needed before bed! :-X

Here's a run down for symptoms and treatments from WebMD. If you fit the criteria - get to the doc ASAP and get tested!

SYMPTOMS. Generally, after an incubation period of one week to several weeks, headache, sore throat, mental and physical fatigue, severe weakness, and symptoms typical of influenza develop. Skin rashes may also occur.
Diagnosis can be confirmed by the finding of a marked increase in the number of mononuclear leukocytes present in the patient's blood. These mononuclear cells belong to the lymphocyte class. Often there is an increase not only in lymphocytes but also in atypical lymphocytes. Another diagnostic test that indicates mononucleosis is the Paul-Bunnell heterophil agglutination test, which demonstrates the presence of certain antibodies capable of causing clumping of cells in a sample of sheep's blood.
In about 8 to 10 per cent of all cases, the liver is involved and jaundice occurs, resulting in a condition that resembles infectious hepatitis. In rare cases, the heart, lungs, and central nervous system may also be affected. The spleen may become enlarged; one of the complications, serious but rare, is rupture of the spleen. The lymph nodes and spleen may both remain enlarged for sometime after other symptoms have disappeared.
TREATMENT. Treatment is chiefly symptomatic. Rest is especially important in the early stages of the disease, or later if the liver is involved. There is as yet no specific treatment for mononucleosis, and no immunization is available. Headache and sore throat may be relieved by aspirin and gargles.
Although the more obvious symptoms may disappear after a period of rest, sufficient rest and curtailed activities must be maintained in order to improve the patient's severely weakened condition and prevent recurrence. There is often mental as well as physical fatigue, especially among students, and in these cases some mental depression may accompany convalescence.
Chronic, lingering infectious mononucleosis occurs in some patients. They experience profound fatigue, low-grade fever, swollen lymph glands, a sore throat, and aching muscles and joints. These symptoms can persist for months or years, and often cause the patient to be labeled neurotic because of a lack of objective evidence of disease. The condition can be definitively diagnosed by blood testing for antibodies to the Epstein-Barr virus. Unfortunately, diagnosis can provide psychological relief only, as there is no effective treatment or cure for the disorder.

Anyways, Babydiva, thats kida the "Book" description. Nothing against it, but sometimes it IS a little different in the feild. But it gets the general idea down.

I had mono not less than a year ago and i got it from my GF. Apparently the sevarity is not commuative. She had a VERY mild case, only out of school for 2 or 3 days. When i got it, it was much more sever. FORTUNEATLY i was out for only 2 weeks, since i got it RIGHT when school went on winter break. (I was 15, freshman year@highschool)

I started developing a VERY painful sore throat. It started on the last 2 days of school before winter break. Since all the teachers kept giving us candy canes, it kept saliva going lowering the pain. With out it, it KILLED to swallow. Any who, it went on and after seeing my doctor who looked and my throat and said "Aw jeez thats ugly." Perscribed some antibiotics. That did jack shit. I soon had to go to Elmhurst Emergency room becacuse thats where my doctor was. He took some blood tests. He had to do a throat culture and blood sample. I HATE throat cultures, but o well. He put me on some VERY heavy duty antibiotics (cleared my acne up alot too). That was xmas eve i went in. So it sucked not being able to enjoy a very delivous dinner and present opening. Xmas morning i still felt like shit, but other than a painful throat, i had NO other symptoms. I had energy, no fever and stomach felt fine. So i had to endour another delicious, but PAINFUL dinner. The next day it started to get better and the day after it went away. I thought it was just VERY bad strep throat since the doc never called about mono. The day after i felt SO tired and i got a call saying i DID have mono. Thanks caitlin, i needed that. So i couldnt kiss her for a month. I just couldnt do much now for the next few weeks. After winter break i missed the first full week of school then i did half days for another 2 weeks.

The antibiotics. I know the deisease is a virus, but is the sorethroat caused by bacteria?

Last year at school mono went around our entire school, fortunatly I didn't get it. But those who did, were out for at least a month. This one girl said she was tired all the time, sore all over, felt like the flu. Just all around horrible. Also, once you have mono, doesn't it stay with you froever?

   <--- About staying with you...

I know it is a virus and the bodies natural immune system will use memory B(one marrow) Cells will recognize the neucleotides on the surface, so they will be ready to strike next time you are infected. HOWEVER, relapses within the next TWO YEARS are VERY likely and is VERY common unless you are VERY careful within the next TWO MONTHS after incubation. After that you will be good, but take it easy those first two months cause you could relapse. As with the 2 years, those are the most common times to relapse anyways, active or not.
