Just a short piece inspired by the things I have seen on various news broadcasts today.

A tattered flag draped over a church altar
A vivid reminder of a dark day in history
The symbols that define us may be damaged
Yet the fabric of our foundation remains

One nation bears the scar of an atrocity
Yet it does not stand-alone
Remembrance for those who were lost
Compassion for those who grieve

:o OH MY GOD.. Rich, that so touched me it was very moving.... WOW, great poem... It shows alot of sympathy for today's anniversary. it made me cry almost...

Awesome poem...very fitting for the anniversery! and Truth, don't feel bad...I DID CRY! haha...but, i've been crying on and off all day...but anyway...GOOD POEM!

Very nice. You should try and find someone to illustrate this poem. not that its necessarily needed since it paints a picture with its words, but I think it could add to this piece even more.
