So this is a combination friend/nurses office post.. i thought this was the most appropriate place.
I got home from work last night, and my mom told me to take off my coat and sit down. So i did... She looked at me and told me there had been an accident involving my best friend.
She's in Kamloops BC with her sister and they were rock climbing and she fell. She fell and pretty much shattered her L1 vertebrae and has no feeling in her legs. She can move her right upper leg.. arund her thigh, but she can't move her left leg pretty much at all... and she CAN'T move her ankles or feet. She has to get surgery sometime this week.. the hospital she's in right now doesn't have the pins and stuff they need to do it so they have to wait for those to get in.
I talked to her last night... she had a sense of humour but that's cause of the morphine. I didn't sleep at all last night, well maybe for like 2 hours but not anything work talkin about.
Her doctors are preparing her for the worse.. which would be paralyzation. She's so full of life, and there's so much she wants to do... she has this eeurope trip planned for next summer... everything's booked she was so excited... she's in school to be a teacher..a math teacher.. why math i've never understood but she's an odd one like that...
Her parents are flying out this morning with all their x-mas presents and stuff... she's going to be in the hospital for at least 10 days and then they have to see how it goes.
I just.. it's so hard cause she's so far away and there's nothing i can do.. last night i was shakin.. almost uncontrolably, and i feel sick to my stomach. I want to be with her so bad. Her family is going to call me after her surgery so we know how it's going.
SHe only fell 6 feet! but she landed flat on her back on some rocks i think is what she told me. This is going to be a crappy next while.. especially untill i know how surgery went.
*Sigh* you guys are good for support so i just wanted to tell someone.
-Thanks for anything
-Cate

:-( I'm really sorry to hear that.

I don't know what to say -- but at least if she's going into surgery they're going to do *something*? And being paralysed from a 6ft fall seems very....unfair, and unlikely (I hope).

I hope you'll keep us updated - it's a horrible thing to have happened but even if she does end up paralysed, it's still possible for her to lead a full life.... and definitely to inflict math on kids :)

Call her lots. Look after her. Look after yourself.

That sucks so much. Especially because its right before Christmas. I know that feeling all too well right now. My boyfriend's Grandpa has been in the hospital since last Monday. We didn't know if he was gonna make it even, but its looking better now, he should be ok. We are just hoping he will be able to get out of the hospital for Christmas day, and then go back in the next day, but it probably won't happen. He's just too weak and hasn't been able to eat. So even if he did get to leave he probably wouldn't enjoy it much. Anyway, I am sending you good wishes and extra good vibes  I hope she is ok and the surgery goes well.

Her mom just called me, they got there today and her family's doing okay. She gets surgery on thursday and she will be in ICU after that for awhile. She's pretty bummed out which is completely understandable. She is a celebrity though: http://www.kamloopsnews.ca/.
She wants to call me tomorrow so they're going to try to get her a phone to her room so she can... everyone's thinking happy thoughts for her... so yeah hopefully it all goes well. Her doctors are saying it looks.. okay.. as she had a BIT of movement in one leg yesterday so here's hoping

i know its rough, but at least she didnt die.....
That would be a kick in the gut to everyone, its bad enough she's severly injured but at least she can still be with you guys on Christmas.
I remember one Christmas at the factory i worked at they called a huge meeting and informed us all that a lady (most knew her, i didnt) had gone to be with her family because her son died in an automobile accident the night before. It was most depressing because he was like your friend, vibrant, full of life, always helping people, etc.
She's probably going to be drepressed for a long time because this has slowed her pace down to a stop, but do everything you can to keep her from sinking too low.... and remind her how lucky she is!!

So i guess Christmas wasnt so bad. She got her surgery on friday, 12 hours worth. Had to go in remove all the little shattered pieces of vertebrae and build a cage around her spinal cord where that vertebrae was... basically build her a vertebrae. She's doing really well. Got feeling in her legs now. No movement, but the feeling is there so that's a good thing :) that made me really happy. Gonna Call her today wish her a Merry Christmas. They don't expect to be home before the middle of January and i miss her alot... so here's hopin that time flys by fast!
Merry Ho Ho all!

I just spent half an hour on the phone with her :) She's doing pretty well.. she's getting pretty bored since there isn't much that she can do. Yesterday she got her nose tube out so now the only tubes she's got in her are her IV's :) She got to sit up for about an hour and a half so that was kinda nice for her.. but she said her butt hurt alot after that.
She gets to come home hopefully close to the beginning of January and then she'l probably be in the Rehab Centre in the city but she'll still be back so that's exciting.
She's doing about as well as she can and she's making the best outta what she can which i knew she would! :) it's been good news so far. They still aren't sure if she'll get movement back in her legs but we're all hoping.
