Ok, so this is more of a question for the ladies here but I'd welcome any experiences any guys have to offer
Anyway, I'm planning a military career and one of the things I've heard is that women supposidy like a man in uniform, although I will hasten to point out that thats not why I chose such a career. My question is do women REALLY like a man in uniform or is that an urban myth created by the military itself to attract a few more soldiers?

There's some truth to it, based on people I've talked to.
I suppose it's completely a social construct, even more so today than in the past. At one time there might have been some actual thought behind it - men in uniform are respected, strong and brave and thus good protectors and providers, especially in unstable times. Today the uniform isn't even much respected, but we're raised with the concept that a uniform is increased sex appeal (might as well be a tusk through the cheek)... so it holds true for some still, but not as much as it once did since we're also more socially accepting towards different ideas of attraction.
So, yeah, don't expect girls to fawn over you. I don't know about Australia, but around here the uniform thing is almost extinct. In the US I know there are at least thriving communities of uniform worshippers -- I'm in a relationship community with about four dozen of them who are obsessed with uniform wearing men and do nothing but talk about their <insert-uniformed-profession> (e.g. "my sailor", "my pilot", "my soldier", "my fireman").

I didn't attract a lot of attention in my combats, though the one I had previously attracted looked spectacular in my camo shirt.... Just the shirt.

I work with conservation officers, and their uniforms are pretty sexy. They're all men, and I'm straight, but even I think they're hot ;). It's not just the clothes, though, it also has to do with the belt full of tools and weapons. So awesome.

There is a well-known fetish about Nurse's uniforms. However those are GIRLS in Nurse's uniforms.
I just can't win. (sigh).

Oh my good god i love men in uniform. Any uniform. The guy im seeing is a firefighter and i love his fire gear and i love the formal uniform he wears to work. I love cops, soldiers, any of that stuff. But at the same time, usually girls like to see men dressed nice and uniforms usually mean being very formal and such.

Personally, men in uniform is something I am not attracted to. In fact, my lunch comes up a little.
I'm more of a "band" girl- my panties would drop at the sight of a guitar.

I personally don't get it. I'll take my computer geeks anyday, thanks. ;)

I'm not too fussed about the uniform thing, but I have to say that my man doesn't look too bad in his security uniform. His fire gear (which I've only seen in photos, he volunteered back in NH) is okay, doesn't have me drooling or anything. I can't really think of anything that I think guys look especially hot in, actually.

Never dated a guy who actually wore a uniform (although my boyfriend looks rather sexy in his hard hat and tool belt), but two of my best friends are in the Army.. and while this is not the most attractive uniform on earth, something in my view of them DOES change when I see them in uniform... not like, ohmygod I need to do you now, but.. well, I can't put my finger on it, but it does do something to a girl. Maybe its the "Damsel in Distress" thing.. no matter how badass a girl is, sometimes you need to be taken care of, and maybe subconciously the sight of a uniform triggers something like that.. or something... lol.

I think it's simply that on some level, EVERYONE finds roleplay to be kinky.

Roleplay what's that?
*goes and dresses in her schoolgirl uniform for her BF...again*
:p
I think the other thing with uniforms like Military ones is that I don't think I've seen a single person who looks BAD in it. It may be just the cut of the cloth or whatever...but again almost no one looks bad in it. :)

When I ran XC in HS, we had these jackets (the company is called Boathouse... I think like every single college uses them on some team). Just the way they were designed and the colors we had made everyone and ANYONE look good in them. All of our guys looked sharp in them. It was so attractive to see the whole guys team wearing them because they looked so offical and bold.
I could also say the same about other uniforms. It just how everyone looks so bold, powerful and official thats so neat about them. Its hawt IMO :D

Lol, I have to agree with that, but with a few alterations, I work in KFC and the uniforms don't make many of the girls look that great, although a few aint bad :p
On a side thought though I thought that perhaps if you can show commitment to something like a military force then you can commit to a realtionship. Might that be a part of it or is wanting commitment from a partner a bit too modern?

having a relationship with a military member is probably one of the most difficult relationships to have ever. they are deployed/underway 6 months to a year at a time. if you aren't married to the person, the only way to get specifics about their comings & goings (and they really aren't specifics) is thru their parents. at least these days email & the internet have made contacting military members easier. i can't imagine what it was like back in the day when all there was was letters & mailing cassette tapes back & forth.

I am reminded of a news story I saw some time ago. Apparently somebody was producing these action figures dressed in a United Parcel Service uniform.
(This requires a little explanation: UPS is a package delivery service. They wear all brown uniforms that, for some un-Godly reason, were declared the sexiest clothes men could wear in Cosmo or some other women's magazine)
Anyway, UPS went to court to stop production of the dolls, NOT because of copyright or anything like that. They were offended that the dolls were selling like hotcakes......in GAY BOOKSTORES! LOL!

nahh man don't let the chicks dig uniforms thing fool you. More then likely if your in uniform.. your' near your base, so the women in the area have to deal with military guys throwing game at them all day, and usually they come to avoid your military ass (which trust me people can pick us out at 5 miles) and once you have to wear that uniform everyday, believe me you can't wait to get the hell out of it as fast as possible. to conclude i'm pretty sure the women being attracted to men in uniform is one great legend
Ohh and about the 6 months to a year deployment, ya thats nice and all but the navy deploys to the middle of the ocean, they don't usally have to worry about hajjii blowing up their stereo out there. When my ass gets shipped to the desert, I'm going for an 18+ month deployment. And living next to some of their favorite targets at a FOB(grounded helicopters, expensive equipment) ensures at least a weekly mortaring
